We don't keep ours at home but did a few years ago. Had another service panel and box installed.
Everything was fine on our end. We moved a couple miles away.We have lost two TVs a bunch of light bulbs, a radio, an I think something else due to surges from people hitting poles, lightning hitting sub station, and transformers and other causes.
Yes I would use one.
