I use mine when plugged in at home. I don't see any reason to take a chance. I live in a rural area & the power has gone off at least 5 times this summer. I really appreciate the advice from others to unplug during a lightning storm. I always thought I was safe since I was using a surge protector. From now on, I am going to unplug during a storm.
