Hush Dutch, don't mention any additional fees in NY cause Albany never saw a fee they didn't like. Truck, dually is 60 a year plus another 60 for my special plates. Trailer is now $220 a year. Don't even want to think about the 7% sales tax paid at purchase.
Just bought a 14 foot fishing boat, 7% sales tax and another $72 for registration, title fee and surcharge. Nobody knows what the surcharge is supposed to be for.

The special plate fee is your choice of course, but looking at what some other states charge, even with that, we're getting off pretty easy. As I recall, the boat reg surcharge pays for various boating safety programs, including the materials for the boating safety course that children under 18 are required to take to operate a boat, and is also highly recommended for adult operators.
We may be "getting off pretty easy" on vehicle registration fees as compared to some other states but lets look at the overall tax burden. In SC, you are charged registration fees on the value of the vehicle, RV, truck etc. Each county sets that rate so it can vary. However property taxes are much lower than here in NY. We have a home down there valued at $180000 and the yearly prop. tax is $760. Compared to our home here which we pay over $4000 a year. Also sales tax on a new vehicle is capped at $300. Compare that to 8% or more on the sales price here in NY. A $25,000 car would cost you $2000 just in sales tax. So you have to look at the overall picture.
