Time to renew registration, $$$ ouch!

Just got the bill to renew the registration on my 06 F-150, $175 ouch! Seems high for a 7 year old truck but guess I just forgot the amount from last year. Got me to thinking, since most of the registration is based upon the value just how much are folks pay for these gorgeous new trucks that roll off the showroom floor at 40, 50 or even $60,000?

We only paid $10K for our (used), 08 TT so it isn't too bad but the new trailers, especially the big dollar fivers must be a serious hit and then there are the Motor Coaches, wow! What do they hit you for a $250K Class A? I guess if you have to ask you cannot afford it, certainly true in my case. No wonder some folks don't mind forking out $40 or $50 a night for RV parks. After the cost of insurance and registration that seems almost reasonable. :S
  • In April 2012 the WA registration renewal for my MH (in my sig) was $116.75 USD and for the smart car it was $43.75 USD

EDIT: I forgot to add that Grays Harbor County does not require emmissions testing. Woot!
  • OP here, I never realized there was so much variation state to state on how registration fees were computed. Having only lived in California and Arizona over the last 60 years my frame of reference in this area is a tad limited. Just happy that ours (here in AZ), go down a little every year and while our property taxes are far lower than California we have a nearly 9% sales tax. I guess no matter where you live they get you one way or the other. :E
  • We pay 6% tax plus registartion/tag fee at purchase and then it drops to about 1% of book value plus registartion/tag fee each year.

Buying/owning a nice 10 year old version of a $65K vehicle for $15K leaves a lot of cash for vehicle repairs just from saved taxes alone in KY.

In the case of buying a used MH (that sold for $200K new) for $30K that leaves one with $10,200.00 to spend on it the first year in just sales tax only savings and about $2000 each year afters from tax/insurance savings.

I think this is a non issue for many but for some of us to save $170,000 up front and lower annual ownership costs is important as average US income is declining each year and in light that some current retirement plans will be directly cut by maybe 50% as states, post office and other federal retirement plans run out of money.

Until this year our area has not been really hit hard but toys are hitting the market like crazy now and job losses in the area are like I have never seen. This makes the tax man's bills get more attention.
  • The only thing that we pay for is our State tags, or license. That is $ 99.00 for a one year period, and this is based on your vehicles weight caring capacity. Our town charges $ 35 dollars for a vehicle sticker. and these fees are also based on your vehicle's class rating. A, B plate being the lowest class at 10,000 LBS. No State fees are charged for emission testing, but having a Diesel truck, no testing is required, only the car is every 2 years. So our fees are based on your trucks GVW carrying capacity, not what it is worth, thus a NEW truck will pay the same as I do for my 14 year old truck.
  • Depends on the state, Colorado charges a percentage of the list price decreasing every year for 10 years down to a fixed fee. And yes that was a small factor in deciding if we wanted to get a newer or older coach. Folks with new high dollar vehicles/RVs get nailed, my '06 F-250 was a bit over $500 when we moved here in '06, now it's down to high $200s. The '99 Alpine is under $200, even though there are weight fees for RVs.
  • NY state is also weight based, with a maximum registration fee for passenger vehicles (includes non-commercial light trucks and motorhomes) of $70/year. Some counties have additional fees and taxes that can add up to about $40 to that. Commercial vehicle fees are higher.
