x2 rear is better for control. You can steer the front tires, you cannot steer sliding rear tires.
As to original OP question. Leave the good tread on the rear. I always lose more tread on the rear tires so I am curious how you are pulling a 5er and keeping the tread on the rear and losing it on the front.
Different composition of tires?
