To each there own, and there are two sides and many opinions but FWIW:
We are not fulltimers but extended timers for 6 to 8 week trips at a time often. A series Gas 37ft for past 13 years with zero toad. Buy groceries as pass enroute, plan our shopping for meals as we do in SnB, milk lasts us week and half not needed to replace daily! Have rented a car in Anaheim/LA for 3 days no problem to explore built up areas; once in Las Vegas Nevada ($9 a day!!) to explore down to Hoover Dam, Pahrump etc, not needed for the strip or Freemont or others with the Deuce available and good shoes. In 13+ years have never missed a toad, find we feel healthier and get fitter when RVing than when at home in the SnB's. When we become FT's or three-quarter timers then after the first year we will re-evaluate whether we need a toad or not, until then we will head into Year 14 and 15 toadless.
It's worked for us thus far the way we roll. We are not hang around CG types, prefer boon docking or using a CG in a built up area as a base with lots of attractions close by to go and explore. Public transport, walking and biking works awesome for us with a once in a very blue moon car rental thrown in.
