Toad 2012 VW Jetta TDI auto

I know one cannot flat tow a 2012 VW Jetta, but can I if I leave the engine running? One mechanic said to leave engine running, and put the tranny in drive, and tow it that way.

Does anyone KNOW?

Thanks.
  • I would not put the tranny in drive!
I don't KNOW that damage would occur, but if it did, it would be expensive.
IF the transmission fluid circulates to the bearings and oil cooler when in Neutral, (not all automatic trannies do), then allowing the engine to idle with the tranny in Neutral will do the job.
BUT, what if the engine overheats, or quits for some reason? then your transmission (and possibly the engine) is toast.
Personally, if the vehicle is front wheel drive, I would get a DEMCO Kar Kaddy SS tow dolly and tow the vehicle on it. MUCH safer, IMO!
