Never used one, and no rock chips to date.
Ever been on the Alaska highway? don't try it without one.
X3
60K miles towing without a scratch. Then Welcome to the Alaskan Highway!
What I learned:
1. If you have the large rear mudflap - the one that is at the back - and it's less than 5" from the ground at ride height then remove it. Otherwise it will kick up rocks to the toad. BTW They are not mudflaps but a marketing and public relations device.
2. Radiator shops love the vertical shields and rear radiators as they can reflect rocks forward into the radiator. Paint can also be damaged.
3. Next best protection is the bra. But it will require daily washing or the dust/dirt will damage the paint. Yes lots of dust on the Alaskan Highway.
4. Best protection is the Protect A Tow type of device.
