TOAD dilemma. Chev Colorado vs Ram 1500

I'm looking for a truck to tow behind an 03 Southwind 32V with WH chassis so I can put my motorcycle in the bed.
I posted previously and was leaning toward the Chev Colorado. I looked at a nice 2012 4x4 with 35k mi yesterday and thought it was a nice truck and would work well as a Toad and daily driver.
However, they are asking $25k for it which seems to be what others are going for online. I'm sure I can get it for less, but likely still looking at $22-23K.
If I go this route, I will keep my 03 Dodge 3500 CTD, to tow my 21' TH with a GVW of 12,800. I'm usually around 8-10k lbs max when I use the TH.
The dilemma is that I can buy a new 14 Ram 1500 QC 4x4 with the Hemi for around $26-27k.
I think this would accomplish what I need, but won't be ideal for either. It would be a little big for a Toad and a little small to tow the TH.
Looking at dry weights, I think the Ram is less than 1k lbs heavier than the Colorado and has a tow rating around 10k lbs. Most TH trips would be locally to the beach and back. 50-100 mi round trip.
I think for the value, the Ram is a much better choice and it would eliminate 1 veh that wouldn't be used much and is expensive to reg and insure.
I have a reinforced 10k lb hitch on the MH with additional 6" channel iron welded from the hitch to the frame of the chassis, so no worries about strength. I'm aware of GCWR with towing around 7k lbs of truck and M/C. I have a 7500 lb Blue Ox Aventa tow bar and plan to get the Ready Brake system.
If the Chev was $15k, I wouldn't think twice as I liked the truck. But, if I can buy a brand new truck that can do both jobs for a few thousand $$ more, I have to give it some serious consideration.
Let me hear your thoughts.
Thanks

  • Just got back from the Dodge dealer, isn't it great camping with all kinds of free time.
I was thinking maybe a 2500 with the 6.4 Hemi might also be an option and would tow the TH with ease. But, with a 6500 lb shipping weight that idea is out.
Anyway, a 1500 quad cab with a 6'4" bed looks like it will work.
  • I need a veh to drive as well so it's not just to carry the bike.
Doing some research it looks like the Ram I would get would be right around 5k lbs. Add 600 for the bike and a few camping items I would be around 6k lbs.
I think with brakes on the truck this would be no problem for a 32' MH on the WH chassis.
Ironically, as I was setting up camp yesterday on the Rincon I saw an older Class A gas MH pass by towing a 2500 Duramax 4x4 with something big in the bed. Didn't get a good look but I'll bet he was towing close to 8k lbs. I know, doesn't make it right.
  • Look closely at the payload of the Ram 1500, as it will probably be less than the Colorado, which doesn't have much either. Ram 1500's are notorious for very low payloads.
  • I"d be looking at a small flat bed trailer to haul the bike. Either of those are a pretty expensive (and very heavy) bike trailer.
  • I would be surprised if your MH is rated to tow over 5K #. I think both of those pick ups would put you over.
