Toll By Plate - A Unique Challenge for RVers!

How on Earth is everyone handling all these automatic tolls everywhere throughout the East Coast??

They are now everywhere.

As I travel from place to place, they snap my plate and that's that. I have no way of getting information on what be I owe. They do not contact you at your mailing address, nothing. Actually, Massachusetts did send a bill to my mailing address, but that's it.

How does anyone know what they owe and who they owe if they are a traveler?

I have cash ready to pay, but they laid off all the toll booth workers and replaced them with machines.

  • It's really a no brainer.

If a toll taker makes $30k per year, reality with overhead is more like $90k/yr

Plus you still need to equip the booth with register, credit card machine, heating and cooling, etc...

A reader fully installed might run $20-30k with minimal ongoing costs.

Obviously, they want you to set up an account so the billing is automated because it does cost more to mail you a letter. Hence the higher price if you don't proactively pay it off.
  • I'm waiting on two right now - one from Toronto area and another from new bridge in Louisville, KY. Agree it is a pain. I have an I-Pass already but that didn't help in Canada and Dave was riding the motorcycle separating going through Louisville because I didn't realize there was a new toll.
  • We experienced this in Illinois. If you wait for the bill the price goes up I think. If you get the toll number you can go online and pay that way within a certain amount of time without being charged extra. They also have toll booth attendants at most of the stops. All in all its a pain.

I'm not a real big fan of automatic tolls and having no idea what you owe, but it seems to be the way things are going. Not too much longer it will be everywhere in the USA - Very low infrastructure cost (compared to toll buildings and paying people), and plenty of money to be made.

If they got your a clear picture of your plate, you will get a bill. Might take a month. Might take 3 months. But you will get a bill.
  • Just get an EZPass. You don't even have to slow down many places and the CC is charged automatically. Costs $3 a year for the one we have, though it varies based on which state you get it from.

You'll eventually hear from the others.
