Tongue Weight

Will towing with water in your tank increase or decrease your tongue weight? My tank is above my axles. Thanks

Tank sitting in the middle (where the wheels are - fulcrum) won't teeter or todder either way...It's nuetral and no affect on the tongue weight.

If the axles were dead center of the trailer I would agree 100%.
But most trailers the axles are just rear of center.
So if your water tank is above our just ahead of the axles it will add some tongue weight. How much I don't know because I was never that good at math.

Freshwater tank on my TT is right up in the front left corner. When I travel with it filled (not very often), I try to "counter balance" it a bit by putting some stuff on the opposite side inside the trailer. I don't find a big difference in towing, but my trailer is just 21 feet.
  • Any weight added in front of the TT axles increases TW. Any weight added behind the axles removes TW. Over the axles? Not much effect.
  • Ok, OK...for all my "southern friends."
This right here is one of them there tetter-todders.

For you folks from the South, that would be a See-Saw!

  • Most seem to be located near the center of the axle set, so there shouldn't be much change in the tongue weight. I suppose there are trailers that have tanks in the front or back and those would definately have a larger impact on tongue. I notice a bigger difference with my gray and black tanks full than my FW tank. Those two are pretty far behind the axles.
  • varies from trailer to trailer, depends on which side of the axle center the center of the tank is on. Mine is slightly ahead of the center point of the two axles, so it does increase tongue weight very slightly. Dunno about yours.
