More To See said folks should have to backpack to teach them about packing. I kind of agree with him but I learned to pack in the Navy. Way back when we went on patrol for 90 to 100 days and we didn't hit any liberty ports. We had two fuel stops about a week after leaving our home port and again about a week before returning. Each of us had a 18" X 18" by about 20" locker and the space under our mattress for storage. In my compartment there usually 12 sailors and we had one 18" X 4" by maybe 12" drawer to store all out toiletries. The shower was filled with potatoes and the rest of the space was devoted to armament.
I learned very well how to be a minimalist. I am still that way and my DW is just the opposite. I received a Solar Powered Battery Tender for Christmas and now I have to figure out If we will need it on a trip or not and then jettison something to make room for it.
You can learn to make do with less but sometimes it is nice to have some extras.
As far as outdoors, we have to be staying someplace for a week or more for me to even get the chairs out. I think we have had to awning out three times since 1998. We're travelers not sitters and it just takes too much time and energy to set up outdoors.
Just our way of doing things
