I think it depends on what you're doing. If I'm just trying to get from point A to point B, then I figure the 50mph (40mph if it's mountain driving). In the SUV, I can easily do a 10 hour driving day; in the clipper, 4 to 6 hours is as far as I like to do in a day.
If I'm doing a road trip with stops along the way, then I figure about 30mph. That way, I might have it worked out as 8 hours at 30mph (240 miles). Odds are that will only take 4-5 hours leaving me 3 extra hours to stop at interesting spots. If nothing catches my eye along the way, then I can spend more time at that evening's stay.
