Top ten best States to Retire

Of these:

1. Tennessee
2. Louisiana
3. South Dakota
4. Kentucky
5. Mississippi
6. Virginia
7. West Virginia
8. Alabama
9. Nebraska
10. North Dakota

At least I've been to them (some just driving through); don't really know anything about cost of living, etc in any.

I believe N & S Dakota wouldn't be to bad for living or retiring. Except the extreme cold weather would be a factor. Great Spots for Summer Residence with a second site for Winter. Nebraska would likewise.

Florida??

Not one of those states would ever make my list of places to live. Three of them are in the snow belt where you need a high output heater in the winter and a good AC in the summer. Where I live I do not need AC at all and my average monthly bill for the furnace is $35.

If I could not afford to live in California I would move to Costa Rica where the cost of living is a fraction of the US and that included medical insurance at $150 a month for gringos that covers everything. Medical insurance is by far our greatest monthly expense and takes 50% of our budget. Privatized medical care is great for the bottom line of the corporations but is a killer for people.

That list is wrong. Y'all need to stay out of the Southeast. :)

I'll retire in Texas but visit other states in the summer to escape the heat. I can't imagine living in any other state and being so far away from my children and grandchildren year round. Besides that, I love my small town in Central Texas.

Always get a chuckle when someone comes up with a list of the best or worst states for something(not the OP, but the person who publishes the list). Compare the best states to retire(posted here) with a recent Gallup poll listing the most miserable states to live in: 1. West Virginia, 2. Kentucky, 3.Mississippi, 4. Tennessee. All in the original list on this post. Go figure :h

Hey TOmN-glad to hear you say that. Being from big PA you probably don't know how to relax anyway. There are tons of fun things to do in the LA MS area. Hope you keep your snow and cold everything else north of the Mason Dixon.

There could be a connection...maybe those States have attracted enough of us crabby old retired folks to make life miserable for everybody else! ;)

Do you own your house where you say you are located? If you do you could buy a mansion in any of the places listed even if you are living in the smallest house in town!

You already live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
