FORGET the toppers! I have had then and not and NOT is the way to go.
Which begs the obvious question - WHY? :h Declaring so without providing any explanation as to why you've come to this conclusion is useless to the OP or anyone else reading this thread who may also be considering a slide topper. :R
In the interest of offering suggestions that could actually help the OP he might want to alternately consider a Slide Out Sweep. I've never personally owned or tried one but it seems like a possible solution to having to climb up on a ladder in order to sweep the slide top clear of debris and certainly is less costly than a topper.
Our Avion Platinum came with slide toppers. In wet weather where we camped a lot you had to get up on the roof any way to sweep the needles and leaves off before retracting. No different than if you did not have them. If you want to retract your slides any time you have a strong wind get them. I spent a lot of time where the wind does blow and they will eventually rip at a seam as mine did.
Next used rig did not have them. Did not miss them at all.
Ordered this RV from the Factory. Thought about getting them and then thought WHY??? Did not order them.
As far as the fan covers go. Our MaxxAir fans have rain sensors. Guess what came home to water on the floor! Also why the HE!! would I want the fan to close just because it's raining???
So YES the FantasticVent is more expensive. BUT it's worth every penny as it does not restrict in or out air flow like ALL the others do.
I have owned the MaxxAir cover it was good quality BUT the installation system on the FV is much nicer along with the attachment system.
