Topping off small LP tanks

My local LP filling place charges a "flat rate" to refill a 20# bottle. Is this common ? (Their price IS reasonable.)

Do any of you try to "transfer" LP between small (5#-30#) tanks using the hot tank/cold tank method ?

The last 4 mouths we have been traveling the south west and have paid anywhere from $1.99 to $3.75 per gallon but not once have I paid a flat rate.

I have tried filling the small disposable tanks by putting them in the frezzer the day before but they never seemed like they got full.

Flame King now make a special refillable 1# propane bottle. $$$ !

Watch this video to see the real secret on how to refill a 1# bottle.FULLY Refill a 1lb Propane Bottle. NO Pre-Chilling!

  • By the gallon wherever I go around my house.. I can top off for only a gallon and only pay the couple of bucks or the full 4.5 gallons and it's just what reads on the meter that you pay for.

I usually take at least two cylinders, bottles or whatever they are called, but I know NOT to call them a "tank" now... ;)

Anyway, they just fill one after the other and it's a gallon meter they read from, so however many gallons it ends up being is what I pay. It's usually a couple of bucks a gallon around here.

Flat rate would just suck for me...

Transfer will be tough unless you have a lower feed tank that serves liquid.

You can transfer gas by simply having the supply tank warmer than the receiving tank. At least 20F difference. Not fast, and you to maintain the temperature difference for the whole time.

I have seen one video where they simply put one tank in the sun for an hour and the other in the shade for 15-30 minutes before the hooked them up. I don't know how long they left them that way.
  • I see a lot that sell be the gallon. $10 minimum.
Do you not have an automatic regulator and two cylinders?

  • I'm sure there are a few, but the only place I've seen a "flat fee" in the inland northwest is the Kalispell Costco. Every other place is by the gallon (around $2.19/gallon last I happened to notice).
  • We have a couple of places in town to fill the tanks including the propane supply company. They both charge a flat rate, which I think is a rip off, but whatcha gonna do?
  • Virtually every place I fill my tanks at has a flat rate whether it's empty or half full.
I always run them dry before refilling.
