Otherwise this is terrible advice. In most other cases you don't go through your own carrier if the other party is at fault. His company has every interest in the claim being closed and you not milking the liability or suddenly feeling like going to see a plaintiff doctor or attorney. They want you signing the release ASAP.
You will almost always get a better deal going through the at faults party's insurance. File with your own carrier and you run the issue of the claim remaining on your CLUE report until they get subrogation finished. Pro tip, when companies subrogate they don't always agree on the amounts and if your companies net remains negative they can still charge you for it on your rates in many states even if you were not at fault. Regardless, you are still responsible for the deductible and your carrier will almost always low ball your values unless you are stated or replacement.
