The first one can work but I'm betting that extra axle assembly is 600-1000lbs eating into tow capacity.
More importantly, for the cost of the assembly, you could add that to trade in value of the 1/2 ton and move up to a 3/4 or 1 ton truck that has the brakes, suspension and drive-train to pull a larger unit.
