tow question

Mt truck has a tow capacity of 9700#. My current travel trailer has UVW of 5500#. When loaded with all our stuff my truck pulls it very well. Im thinking of upgrading to a TT with UVW of 6900#. Obviously, I would load the same "stuff" in it. How well would my truck pull it? The new camper has a GVWR of 9500#, so the numbers look like it's within capacity. Am I right?

You will probably not be happy with the additional weight.

It's not all about tow capacity, or safety. First and foremost it's about your comfort. That goes against what most people will tell you. They will try to brow beat you and tell you that you will be murdering busloads of orphans and nuns by going one pound over the ratings, but the reality is you will HATE driving the rig long before you become a public menace.

Starting with a 5500lb trailer you are probably running around 6500lbs fully loaded. That's a respectable load for an F150/1500 type pickup truck. Your proposed new trailer will exceed 9000lbs loaded, because you will NOT be putting the "exact same" stuff in it. It has bigger water tanks. It has more storage space. You will be putting more in it.

Ignoring all other factors, towing anywhere near the maximum rating with an F150/1500 style pickup truck is simply not enjoyable. It's not something you want to do over long distances on a regular basis.

    Well put

  • You might be within the tow capacity but that's the last number you should be concerned with. With a 1/2 ton truck you'll usually far exceed the payload, and/or axle, and tire ratings before coming anywhere near the tow capacity.

Todays' trucks have plenty of power to tow the weights but lack in payload etc. What kind of truck? How many passengers and weight do you put in it? What the tongue weight of the loaded tt?
  • I have no answer for you. You do not supply enough useful information.
TV GVWR, TV loaded ready to travel weight minus trailer. Current trailers loaded reafy to travel weight. You need all that plus engine rear end specs before anyone can offer a reasonable guess.
