Tow Rating

Hi all,

Can I safely tow using tires rated "XL" (I.e 115s, 119r etc) vs the "e" rated? I'm still new to towing, but would like to tow my TT safely. I'm currently using the stock Bridgestone Dueller P275/55r20 that came with my 2012 GMC Sierra. I'm having a hard time looking for E rated tires that would fit my truck without any rubbing.

Thanks,
Gerry
  • I switched from Firestone tires to the Nitto Terra Grappler and could not be happier with the Nitto tires. There are two types, a D and an E rated version and you can save money with a 1/2 ton truck getting the cheaper D rated ones.

I put the Nitto 285/70R17 on my 3/4 ton truck and no problems with clearance. If a tire is 1" taller than the stock ones it is only going to extend out at most an additional 1/2 inch.
  • Thanks for the info. Now I just have to decide on the Nitto Terra Grappler or the Cooper Discoverer AT/3.
  • The tires you need to run on your truck is printed on the plate on yor door frame for towing or anything else.
  • With a P as OEM you must have a 1500 truck.

The P XL is a excellent choice over the LT E for your 1500 truck for several reasons. Keep them pumped to the max sidewall psi. They will run cooler and doing so stiffens the tires sidewalls up and helps with trailer sway issues. They also have much less parasitic drag (rolling resistance) than a E tire at 50 psi.
I keep OEM LT265/70-17 C on the wifes 1500 crew cab 4x4 chevy. When hauling or towing I keep them at 50 psi and air down to 35 psi when not.
