If the radio backlight is on, that's the problem, you are draining your battery. There should a key position between "locked" and "aux" where the steering will be unlocked but the accessories will be off.
Just to clarify, the Suburu is not your "tow vehicle" since you are not towing a trailer with it. Rather, it's your "towed vehicle" also known as a toad or dinghy.
