down home is right. We've noticed this problem for the past 50,000 miles pulling our Vibe on a dolly. It does help a lot to close the air conditioning vent & put it on recirculation. As said above rubber, oil, etc. from the road collects on the manifold, etc. while your towing and then burns off when you run the toad engine.
