Towing 2016 F150 with Ford V10

Would like to know if anyone out there has experience with towing a 2016 Ford F150 with a motorhome equipped with the Ford F53 chassis (V10 gas engine), and the 5000 pound capacity hitch. I am considering such a set-up and have checked all the parameters and everything appears to be OK. Weight of the truck is about 4700 lbs.,and I am under the GCVWR of 26,000 pounds. I currently tow a Ford Focus and can barely tell it is back there. I would expect some issues going up steep grades and a degradation in gas mileage. Has anybody seen any other issues?

Thanks!
  • Hi Mike,

Thanks for the input. I too originally wanted to go with a lighter/smaller pick-up (looked at the GMC Canyon/Chevy Colorado), but I need to be able to carry six passengers, and I use the truck to haul hay, firewood, sheep, etc, so needed something a bit bigger. The new lighter weight aluminum F150 with the Ecoboost 2.7L V6 seems to fit the bill.

Yes, I did factor in the weight of the tow bar (35 lbs) as well as the weight of options and accessories. Although I will be weighing the truck to verify, right now I'm at about 4850 lbs and about 500 lbs under the GCVWR.

    Amando
  • Don't forget the weight of the tow bar. I have the F53/v10 with the 5k hitch. After weighing all the options I went with a 2016 Nissan Frontier with the v6 and manual 6 speed. You will be surprised how easy it is to add weight. Other consideration is the ease of 4 down, Some need 4wd with transfer cases in neutral and others not. With a manual I just turn the key one click to unlock the wheel and verify neutral. Good luck
  • Thank you everyone for your responses. Since I know I will be close to my limits, I will be careful about what I load in the truck. For example, I will be putting in aluminum running boards and an aluminum tonneau cover and will be traveling with close to an empty tank of gas (which saves about 140 pounds). I also plan to weigh the truck in it's toad configuration to make sure I'm OK with the weight.

Any additional input would be greatly appreciated!
  • I used to tow a Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab short box behind the motorhome in my sig.
I have no idea what the Ram weighed, but we went across Marias Pass/The Continental Divide with no problems.
I am considering beefing up the hitch on the coach and towing the truck in my sig. I wanted a truck with more pulling power, swo I got one, Now it is just a little heavy for the 5K hitch!
    But maybe....
  • Welcome to the to forum. My truck is heavier than yours and no problem. I have a 10k hitch.

Grades are not an issue. Can't speak to mpg difference as we always take the towed.
