In my opinion, divide the vehicle tow rating by 2 and that's the comfortable (non-white knuckled, cross country joy on the interstates) real world tow rating.
Umm! No! I am 2k lbs under my tow rating on my Excursion, toes just fine. Been on many very long trips. I have driven up to 14 hours in one day and the setup did not tire me out, time did! I was also towing a 6500lb loaded TT with a Dodge conv van and it was towing a few hundred lbs under its tow rating. Took a 2 week trip to Glacier NP and was not worn out, most relaxing 2 weeks I've ever had!
It's all about the setup! If setup properly just about any combo will be a comfortable row experience. Improperly setup after 1 hour on the road you may never want to tow again! I've seen 3/4 ton trucks that were not setup properly!
