Towing a Mazda Tribute

I am totally confused about towing our 2011 Mazda Tribute. I have been towing it since 2011 and no problems until 28 June 2013 on our way home to El Paso. About 64 miles outside of Amarillo, TX east on I-40, we entered into a rest area. I got out of the Melbourne to start the Tribute so that the battery would be re-charged after driving El Reno, OK (using an electric brake for the car). My spouse noticed that smoke was coming from under the hood of the car. I could not see any fire or where it was leaking. But I did notice that the Tribute would not start nor could I get out of Park. Make a long story short, the Mazda dealer in Amarillo said that the transmission, sensors, wires were totally destroyed and very little transmission fluid left. It will take another two weeks to get it back.

Do I need a lube pump? Or did I do something else wrong? I was told when I bought the Tribute that it could be towed down on all 4, put it in neutral, and leave the key in.

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Thank you,
Leo
  • The Mazda Tribute is a twin to the Ford Escape, many of which have also experienced transmission failures. Ford stopped authorizing towing 4 wheels down of Escapes built after 2/28/2012 but is still honoring the warranty of those built before that date.

What did the Mazda dealer tell you? One solution is to have a lube pump installed. I understand that Ford has paid (or partially paid) for the installation of Remco lube pumps on some vehicles which have experienced transmission failures.

You can search other threads on this website re: Escape transmission failures for more information.
  • DouglasC,

Thank you very much for the information. Perhaps Mazda will honor the warranty.
