towing a vehicle

I have a 2008 Civic with Auto trans and have towed it 4 down for over 12,000 miles in the past 6 months without any issues. I read a post that gave Honda's suggested procedure for preparing the transmission for 4 down towing. Basically, it's slowly moving from Park, through Reverse, Neutral, Drive, D2, D3, back to D2, D, and finally to Neutral again. Turn key to I and turn off all accessories (lights, radio, etc.) and lock the door behind you with an extra key. You are ready to tow. I run my engine for 10-15 minutes before hooking it up and may restart and repeat procedure along the trip if I'm exceeding 300 miles in a day's travels. My Civic was paid off, so I decided to use it rather than trade it in on another vehicle. Hope this info helps.

Remco says it must be on a tow dolly in either manual or automatic.

check your owner's manual. I would guess that if your car is AWD it can't be.

yep, and some have a section for "towing behind a motorhome". IMHO that is the only "official" guide. now folks here seem to think that if somebody sells a base plate for their Hudson Hornet, that that guarantees that it is towable 4 down. others will say that they have towed their Nash Rambler for 50,000 miles and it hasn't broken down yet. Do you feel lucky?
and if you haven't bought that toad yet, be sure to buy one that doesn't need any mechanical alteration to work such as tranny pump, drive shaft disconnect, etc.

Per Honda, the 2013 Honda Civic is not a vehicle which can be towed "4 down" behind a MH. They only allow the Fit and CRV models to be towed in that configuration.

Just about every vehicle can either be adapted or carried with a dolly or trailer. I find the safest and most ideal is to hook the towed vehicle "four down". This means all the tires of the toad (i.e. slang for towed vehicle) are on the ground. Do get good advice and you will find that Demco, Blue Ox, Roadmaster, are among very reputable firms that will help with your specific situation. The Escapees have a Boot Camp coming up in Congress AZ soon, and if you can get there and if they have an opening, I would start there. In teaching RV safe driving we have seem some very questionable hookups, so my professional advice is be ready to pay to get it done right.
