At one time I had a '97 Blazer with the big V-6 and 4-speed auto trans. I needed to pull a new 24 Ft Searay Sundancer about 1500 miles so I added a trans cooler and towed it the entire way over 2 days in 3rd gear at about 55 mph. No problems. The boat's dry weight was about 5500 pounds and the trailer probably weighed 1000 pounds.
Better to drive slow and be safe. It's best to let the motor rev a little instead of lugging. Not saying you need to turn high revs. Check out the HP and torque curves so you know where to run it.
