My '98 12v 5sp/4.10 Cummins Ram ran 2500rpm at 70mph. No choice in the matter. Any gas V8 on the market can run 4k rpm all day without any trouble at all if it needed to. My boat runs 6,000-7500rpm for however long it takes to get out to the reefs and back.
