My rig is the 6.0 with a 4 spd with 204k on the engine and transmission.. I tow in 3rd probably 80-90%of the time. I've got a tranny temp gauge, and it stays cooler in 3rd. Also I don't have to push the gas pedal down as far. I haven't compared the gas mileage between the gears, and I don't won't to know how bad it is.
I will shift into 4th if I can see I'll be on a long downslope. Not sure if it helps any, but the quietness is nice.
