I think the new gassers are sooooo much better than they used to be. They've really come a long way in the past few years.
Having said that, I just made the move from a gasser to a diesel. I wouldn't go back for towing. For sneaking through the campsite? Diesel sucks. For keeping environmentalists happy? Definitely not diesel. For pulling my 8,000 lb trailer through the Canadian Rockies? Diesel all the way.
I rarely left 5th gear (I only have 5), and on the worst hills I only ever down shifted to 4th. That includes the NASTY Rogers Pass. That's one ugly climb! 4th gear all the way, and I didn't lose a single mph on the road.
But, and this is what I liked the most, my fuel economy in the mountains was 10-11 mpg. With my gasser (not in the mountains) I was lucky to get 7.5. I shudder to think what my gasser would have gotten in the mountains.
OK. I lied. I liked the power the most. The fuel economy was just a nice bonus that I used to justify the noise to my wife. *wink*
