No, and sometimes you can end up burning LESS.
It's foolish to blindly leave the truck locked out of OD if the driving conditions would allow you to run in a higher gear, though. You're not going to hurt anything experimenting a little and learning what YOUR particular rig likes best. A little bit of transmission hunting is not instant doom and gloom; just learn to recognize it and react appropriately. It's allowing the transmission to hunt for thousands upon thousands of miles that causes damage.
