Well I am wrong on occasion! LOL. But its modern transmissions that I am most familiar with...not older ones. And really, they are not fundamentally different.
I think there is more honest and unintentional confusion here than anything. Confusion over "OD off" options, vs locking out higher gears or selecting gears manually, vs "torque converter lockup" which is completely and entirely different.
The torque converter lockup is done via numerous clutch types, which stops all slippage of the 2 "fans" within. Its the ATF "slipping" between the fans that raises heat, but this is required for auto trans to operate correctly.
Whether or not the lock up clutch is activated in lower gears at speed could only be proven with a scan tool displaying when the lock out clutch is activated.
