My 5R110 feels like a 9-speed and I never understood it until I had my ScanGauge. The 5R110 is actually a 6-speed transmission, but one gear is used only in cold weather to warm up the transmission fluid and otherwise is not used. When accelerating slowly it will go through unlocked and locked states in the upper four gears which you can feel and see via RPM's on the tachometer. Hard acceleration usually does not lock the converter on mine and simply shifts up the gears until you back off the pedal. Deceleration with converter lock up depends on your tow/haul mode setting more than the rate you decelerate.
Use of a scan tool definitely will help you understand how your transmission responds to loads and pedal application. It also will help you understand how the transmission reacts when starting out with the gear selector in positions other than drive.
How hot does your transmission get when towing? The hottest mine ever gets is about 170*. And that's on some nasty mountain passes in the Canadian Rockies.
