The post above is helpful. This is something I had always wondered about, but never really tested out--if there were times when running higher rpms lower gears would actually give you better gas mileage. Lower gears and higher rpms obviously give you more useable power in hilly terrain and when towing, but never was sure what the impact was on gas mileage.
