I cut everything off, pull the fuse, then turn the key 2 clicks forward which allows me to put the transmission in neutral, then 1 click backwards, tow 250 miles and start the engine for 5 minutes, run through the gears a couple of time and do it all again. Our lights are independent of the car lights. I think we used Roadmaster Tail Light Wiring Kit, part # RM-155. This wiring kit will have independent bulbs and sockets that are mounted inside the tail lights. This will bypass the towed vehicles electrical system completely.
What kind of auxiliary braking system do you use? Is it plugged into the 12volt lighter?
