Towing my 32 foot TT from Maine to Florida...need help

I am planning on towing my 2008 Zinger 32 foot travel trailer from Maine to Florida in April using my 2003 Ford Excursion 4x4 Limited with a 6.8 Liter gas engine with 107,000 miles. I don't use my Excursion much other than to haul around my toys and I've certainly never gone that far with it. Does anybody have experience making a similar trip and can offer any suggestions? Also, does anybody have any suggestions on what kind of maintenance I need to have done on my Excursion and/or camper before I make the trip? Thanks

  • The owners manual will outline all maintenance that should have been performed up to this point. You should refer to it for accurate information.

Since you got so much Time till your trip I would probably do a tune up including new spark plugs, new boots and springs for the COP's. I'd replace the drive belt, transmission fluid, radiator fluid, and tires if needed.

If you have not done these items, I agree now is the time.

I'll add 7 other areas not knowing when you last dis these

    1. Change the oil in the rear differential

    2. Change the oil in the transfer case

    3. Change the oil in the front differential

    4. Check all the brakes. Pull the wheel and look at the pads and inside of the rotor which is hard to see from the outside.

    5. Transmission filter, air filter and fuel filter

    6. Have the front end checked. You really do not want to be dealing with a bad ball joint etc in the middle of a trip.

    7. The battery, this one can come out of no where if you are still on the original battery.

The truck is a good puller and a good engine. It does however need the maintenance areas attended to. 100,000 miles on these trucks with the regular maintenance is not a concern.

Also good to have this done a while before the trip to make sure something is not disturbed that should not me.
  • My folks snow bird between Mount Desert Island & the Florida mid-coast a little south of Canaveral. Dad always makes a point of leaving Boston (Hanscomb AFB military campground) right around midnight so they can beat the traffic in NYC. Even if they leave on a weekend it apparently starts getting bad around 5 or 6 AM. Not sure exactly where they stop, but I think it's around Cape May where they grab the ferry.
  • Remember that a long trip can be thought of as a series of short trips. Feel better?
  • My V10 got about 7.5-8 mpg... Other than that it was great.

The V10 is a very nice motor for towing.

    Thanks!

  • I didn't put plugs in ours until about 120,??? and they didn't look bad. If you have kept up with maintenance all along don't do anything else. I think I changed the tranny filter at about 100,000.
  • Is that the V10 6.8L with 107,000 miles? They recommend new plugs at 100,000 miles.
