Definitely get some type sway control. I have towed with friction controllers for the last 15 years, tens of thousands of miles, and have yet to remove my friction bar to back up. Neither have I broken one. The only thing I do is release the tension if I am making several tight turns in a row, such as entering or leaving a campground. The only reason I do that is to slightly extend the life of the thing.
