Hello everyone. My family and I have been lifetime campers. We recently sold our 20' hybrid TT and will be upgrading to a much larger unit. We really like the Jay Flight 32RLDS for our needs.This TT has a dry weight of around 8,000lbs and a tongue weight of close to 1,000 lbs. My truck is a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 5.9, tow package and beefed up sport edition. I think it can handle around 7,200 for towing and 1,000 tongue weight with a WD hitch.We plan to have the TT delivered to our campground and then go permanent for the foreseeable future.My question is will my truck be capable of moving the trailer INSIDE the campground if necessary? I hate the idea of not being able to move (or re-situate) the camper to a new site or to the storage area at the campground.My thoughts although well over weight for road driving, I would be fine for this limited use. Thanks.

Thanks.Since your talking very short moves not involving public highways I think you will be fine. If you find your tongue wt. is way above your receiver's limit then you could always take off the propane bottles and battery and even put them temporarily in the back of the trailer secured for the short move inside the CG. I would probably even forgo using any WDH since at the distances and speeds even overloading the receiver by say 2X should be O.K.As an alternative a lot of CGs have small tractors that can move TTs within the CG and you could pay to have that done also or even hire someone with a tractor to come and move the TT for you for probably less than a couple of hundred $$s.Larry

I would still use a WDH for moving between sites. I moved my camper before without a WDH and the steering was REAL LIGHT!

Thanks for the responses...... I just wanted to confirm my thinking. I will be sure to watch the tongue weight closely (remove everything from inside the front of the camper and maybe even the tanks/battery etc.) before moving it.The campground will move campers for a small fee, I just hate the idea of not being able to do it myself if I need/want to.The truck is pretty stout as I routinely load the bed with unseasoned hardwood during my winter firewood gathering. It does very well with just a little "squatting".Down the road if we decide to do any real towing I'll upgrade to a 3/4 or 1 ton.

In your case I would move it with your P/Up. I used to move our 28 ft TT from the front yard to the back yard with my 4 cy Toyota P/Up. Never had a problem.I never used WDH either.

Just an update. I went ahead and moved the camper myself. I had a good bit of squat but nowhere close to reaching the bumper stops. Other than that, the truck performed flawlessly with plenty of power and trailer braking for my short move.

I'd never attempt hauling it on the open road with my rig, but for the campground move, it was plenty adequate.

FYI, per Jayco's website mine has a unloaded weight of 7200 lbs. Per the yellow (as-is) sticker on the side it's 8100 lbs. That's almost a 1000 lbs difference between the two "unloaded" weights.
I say this because my camper is very similar to the one you're looking at. My scaled tongue weight is close to 1500 lbs. That's going to squat that 1500 a good bit without a WD hitch, not to mention the hitch rating on the truck.

I didn't miss it. I moved a 7k 20'enclosed trailer across a storage lot on the bumper of my S10. His truck is definitely capable of moving his trailer across a campground at 5mph.

Moving it around inside the campground will be not problem. You might need the WD hitch, depending on how much it sags in the back. I would do it.

I wouldn't even bother moving the propane tanks or batteries or anything like that. Just do it.

If something breaks on the truck, it was ready to break, and it was good that it broke in a controlled environment at slow speed, rather than on a busy highway at 65MPH.

Pay a friend with beer to move it. Your truck without WD limit is around 600 pounds. That TT will have 1200-1400 pounds once full of seasonal crap. Not worth spending $300 on a WDH. Have it delivered, mingle with your neighbors, and pay with beer if you ever need it move it.
