I just did that in July. I also have a D-max. When it downshifted on the way up I held the rpm's to 2500. No problem and no overheating. On the way down the transmission will select a lower gear as you brake. once it is in the right gear you will not need to use your brakes. Mine held 55 MPH all the way down.
