Towing with a trailer toad

Hello, im new to the site. I have a 1996 Tiffin Allegro bay 32' class A with F53 chassis, banks equipped 460. I plan to tow a 28' enclosed trailer with race car. I have a trailer toad to assist with tongue weight. I had a chassis shop build in extra support to the rear of my frame to help with linear stress. I know that the rv GCVW is 25000. The GVWR is 17000. The trailer weighs 4000, the car weighs 3200. With tools, 4wheeler, and misc in trailer it will be at 8000. I have added a class 4 hitch to RV. How does using the trailer toad effect any or all of the weight ratings?

  • i have recently purchased a 2016 Thor four winds class C with a triton V-10. Not sure of the transmission. This new unit pulls the 28' trailer with the trailer toad in between very well. The rv is a 28'.
  • Ive been towing a 30 ft travel trailer with a trailer toad for five years now and really enjoy the benefits. It takes all of the tongue weight (1100 lbs) off my truck and allows me to corner better with it, than without due to the fact that the wheels adjust approximately 20 degrees. It al but eliminates any sway issues and is easy to back once the backing plate is on to lock the wheels.
  • I think it'll be hardest on the 460 and the trans in general?? While that was the last gen of the good ol 7.5l 460, it was not the most powerful either... I think my 3.5l V6 Ecoboost has more power... ;)

And the trans is probably the ol E4OD and has it's own issues too...

Hauling an additional #8000 on top of the already heavy RV is really going to bog it down..

    Good luck!

  • Are you talking about something like this?

This looks like a complete system to improve your weight distribution. So the hitch weight of the trailer goes on those 15" wheels, not the hitch on your RV. Then only a fraction of the overall hitch weight is put on your RV's hitch.

The system is pretty sophisticated. It has locking pins to allow backing up, that are raised for driving forward and allows some steering of the tires, less tire scrub. When locked, it keeps the tires straight, so you can park the trailer and back up, hopefully at speeds less than 10 MPH.

I know with my 30' motorhome and 190" chassis, there is only about 12" of frame extension behind my factory frame. Your length indicates about 24" more frame extension, and you stated that somebody already looked and made it stronger. That is a good thing.

Your GCVWR should be 26,000 pounds. Mostly limited by the strength of the transmission. I would recommend installing a larger trans cooler in your case.

When I towed my brothers cargo trailer, I did not use any tow dolly like you are planning. I as fine because my RV has a 100 gallon rear mounted fresh water tank under the bed. Leave it empty, and you have about 800 pounds of extra hitch weight available. This hitch weight takes away from my front axle being marginally overloaded, so it works out well. I have extra capacity on my rear axle, but not much on the front one.

The extra two tires will not provide any extra braking.

You might want to look up disk braking systems. ETrailer.com

    Good luck in your travels,

    Fred.
  • Hi and welcome to the forums! :) Glad you are here and hope that you get some help with your question.

I have to say however, that I have never seen anyone post about the Trailer Toad. I have seen some for 5th wheels but never one quite like that. There used to be a couple of manufactures that made much smaller ones but they have long gone out of business. It will be interesting to see if we have any members who have used one. It looks like quite an interesting device!

I noticed that the website has a pretty good FAQ section. You might want to ask your question there also.

I would take a guess and say that the only rating that would be affected would be the total weight rating (GCWR).
You would not have any tongue weight on the motorhome so you would have to be aware of your GCWR and any limitations on the total weight rating of the hitch you are using. I don't know if your frame modifications would have any bearing on the ratings or not.

Good luck with your question and I hope it gets some good response.
