Toyota SJ?

Can the Toyota SJ be towed all 4 down? Thinking of buying one.

Thanks,
Steve

    What does this mean?

I think it means he agrees with me. :)
    bumpy
  • No, and do NOT buy something that needs to be modified to be able to tow it. drive shaft disconnect, transmission oiler, etc. look in the owner's manual under towing behind a motorhome or recreational towing for the "true facts".
    bumpy
  • FJ Cruisers are not towable 4 down or on a dolly, even the manual transmission ones. The manuals have a special limited slip differential in the transfer case that cannot be towed. The 2WD FJs are automatic and as mentioned in the previous post, none can be towed.
It's a shame because they would work well as a toad, if they could be towed.
You can tow the old FJs that look like Jeeps.
  • Can't find a Toyota "SJ"... do you mean the "FJ"?

Best to ask that question of Toyota, but a quick search turns up the following general answer. Source is Edmonds, here quoting for what it's worth:

    Toyota Engineer Dave Lee wrote:
No Toyota, Lexus or Scion vehicle with an automatic transmission is suitable for dinghy towing, Lee says. And the company's manual transmission vehicles aren't all designed the same. Some require continuous operation of a pump inside the transmission to keep the moving parts lubricated, and those can't be towed four-down.
