Trailer Tire Wearing Issue??

While on an outting last week, a member of our group noticed something strange on the tires of my 26 ft travel. trailer.. The trailer has two axels and the tires on the forward axel are evenly worn across the entire tire face however the tires on the rear axel are both wearning down on the OUTSIDE edge only. I have included a picture of the tires with normal wear patterns showing the tread wear line still evident on the front tires, however the other picture shows that the tire wear lin on the outter edge of the rear tires has worn completely off. All tires were maintained at 65 psi as recommended on the tire itself. The tires have about 4.5 K miles on them. Any ideas on what is causing this so it can be corrected?

  • Look at the inside edge of the tires in front.Bet they are wore on the inside edge.
  • Hi Ted,

That condition "might" come from the toe angle of the wheels being wrong and/or the rear axle is not parallel to the front axle creating a scrub angle to the road.

Alignment issues on TT's is not totally uncommon. Some are wrong from day one. The axle can be made wrong and the hangers welded on in the wrong location. I was the lucky one to have this happen to me.

And yes, if the axle and wheels are out of alignment, 4,500 miles can grind up a tire.

While it is hard to see by the naked eye, if you have an accurate depth gage you can see a wear pattern across the entire face if one exists. Tires when made new are amazingly perfect in thread depth. If the wheel is out of alignment it will scrub in place of roll and the wear will be there.

This post may help if you want to try and check some of this yourself. There is also a link on there to my troubleshooting post leading up to the correction. TT axle alignment & install - Detailed (long lot's of pics)

Tandem axle trailers do have tire edge wear from turns in ST tires, however all 4 tires can get that.

Good luck and hope this helps.

PS If wheel or axle are out of alignment, it will keep wearing and kill 2 tires and then you still have to deal with it.
  • Is your rig level when towing?

    Have you weighed your rig?

Front axle tires wearing evenly but rear axle tires wearing on outer edge.....
    Lighter weight on rear axle.

It looks like your tires are not preforming to specification. Increase the pressure till tje wear pattern improves. I've seen this before on heavy loads.

  • The axle may need alignment or re-bending. Seek out a good big truck spring shop for a solution.
  • It's normal for them to wear that way in back because of the flexing that occurs in corners. nest time you make a sharp corner watch them in your rear view mirror - it horrific!
You can rotate them to slow it down if you like.
  • I'm a "start with the simple things" type:

Have you ever rotated the tires? Some folks don't, but others do, just like on a car. That wear certainly fits the "no rotation" pattern shown in the chart below. If you do rotate, that pattern could point to alignment problems according to the same chart.
