Travel days??

We have been Rving for over 8 years and traveled well over 100K. We rarely are in a hurry and hate "forced marches" where we have to meet a time schedule. In general we echo the comments of KTSrf as to times of travel. One thing we have not seen mentioned is that taking the "loop" around large cities no longer works. Generally its better to just grind through. The suburbs have grown up around and past the loops and the loops are just as congested and crowded and a straight shot through, and they are shorter.

We are retired and we travel as our schedule dictates. This last trip we left on a Saterday and traveled for the next 5 days to our destination. Left on a Monday and traveled for 5 days to home. I could care less what the workerbees do. The road is just as much mine as thiers.

My favorites are Monday through Sunday

Tuesday or Wednesday

Local camping, Fridays going north and Sundays south is the pitts so I avoid them. I don’t avoid holidays but I do avoid campgrounds then, simply too much of a zoo. Longer distances I don’t pay much attention to the days, but it is best to avoid hitting the campgrounds on the weekend.

Typically Mondays......

Leave around 10am and pull in around 3pm at our destination for the week.

We travel by moving shorter distances, sometimes 2-3-4 days in a row. We usually leave on Sunday or Monday and park somewhere from Wed or Thurs until Sunday. We have found that 200 miles or less is agreeable to both of us and we aren't too tired from traveling to enjoy what is around us.

For local camping we like to leave on Sunday morning. This gets us to the CG (usually 3 to 4 hours away), just as the weekend crowd is departing. Lots of site choices and they often come with free firewood. We usually head home on Friday morning and leave the weekends for the working folks.

On longer trips we like to travel Monday thru mid dayThursday and get settled in someplace and avoid the heavier traffic found on Friday - Sunday. Where ever possible we flat out avoid all of the holiday weekends, just too crazy out there for us. :C

We often plan to arrive at a CG tuesday afternoon, gives us lots of campsite choices, especially when school is in session. If it's a short campout, leave on friday AM before the weekend crouds, otherwise leave on a Monday or Tues AM.

And arriving mid week at "first come first serve" campgrounds lets us usually get the pick of sites, including weekend stays.


And in general we avoid any major holidays for camping (memorial day, labor day, 4th of July).

On long trips, we try to get someplace for the weekend early friday and then depart Monday AM.

Amazing how "deserted" campgrounds can often be midweek, even in the summer. Not that we mind the weekend crowds, but weekdays sure can be relaxing and more like camping that we did as kids.

Also, we try to avoid major metro area morning and night rush hours and plan stopovers accordingly.

Since we live in portland, we either leave about 6am or wait till about 10AM to leave, and try to arrive by 3pm or after 7.

In fact going to/from portland we have a couple of places outlined o stay at if needed that lets us meet the arrival departure time requirments.

We try to avoid fridays and weekends especially when they are associated with holidays.
