Sounds like a fable from someone that has never traveled in Canada. Canada is NOT a third world country. While the severe winter weather can cause problems on some roads, they are repaired during the spring and summer. Now 97 is a beautiful drive. From your home, head up I5 to Portland, I205 and I84 to Biggs junction. Pick up US97 there and head north. Follow your GPS to head east at I90 jogging through eastern WA up near Grand Coulee picking up 97 up north. There are so many places to spend a night. At the border crossing be prepared to a detailed search. Apparently this crossing gets a lot of drug traffic.
