Travel Time

A long while back I ran across some information on this site concerning daily travel time. It had something to do with the number 2 and went something like this. 200 miles 2 hours before dark 2 cocktails before dinner. Please don't quote me on any of this. Does anybody recall anything like this?
My travel days are one tank of fuel cuz I'll get there when I get there.

  • We apply the last "2" of 2x2x2 as "Two consecutive days of travel, max." A little more flexible.

I find that about 45 miles an hour is a pretty close average for us,it kind of depends on the coffee intake.:)

On our long trips, after you account for a long stop for breakfast, lunch and dinner (we have 2 kids in tow)- we average 40-45 mph.
  • On boats we say "Parties 6, dines 4 and sleeps 2", maybe that should apply to RV's also. When traveling causally we do 200-250 miles. Leave at 9 and stop in early afternoon.

Getting to and back from snowbird park we sometimes do 400-500 miles in a day!

  • My 2X2X2 is Drive 200 miles, get off the road by 2pm, stay atleast 2 days.
  • 50 mph average. Holds true almost without exception. By car only it only increases to 55 mph average.

  • My dad, who used to drive truck OTR, told me just plan 2 hours for every hundred miles. So as yrusoslo said, 50 mph. That formula works very well for general planning on long trips.

    This is so true!
  • We have found that pulling our 5th wheel, with an end destination in mind in the very near future, that 400 miles per day is about maximum.
