The group we travel with have been doing pretty much this same thing, but to airshows usually, for 35+ years now.
We've tried lots of different ways to do it, the one we always come back to is this;
The route is planned (we're sometimes more than a dozen vehicles) from the person who lives the furthest away to the destination. Sometimes the furthest few gather up at a closer persons place the day before departure. The drive is broken up into 4 parts per day, up to morning break, up to lunch, up to afternoon break, up to days end. People can drive at whatever speed they want, in sight or on ahead, but everybody stops at the planned points. If anyone has an issue, or potential problem someone else equipped and prepared to stop and help is always behind them just in case.
It seems to take a lot of the tension out of the trip because everyone has a little 'wiggle room' but were still a 'group' and there's plenty of time to stop and chat, etc., along the way.
