For quick stays, hotels are usually the way to go cheaper and more flexible. For longer trips, though, B&Bs offer a homier experience and can be cost-effective if you factor in the kitchen and other amenities.
If you're considering RV travel again, a small travel trailer sounds like a great compromise. I recently stayed at Westgate's Branson hotels, and they had some nice options for families and groups, though it's not quite the same as the RV life.
