I don't actually carry in other states unless hiking alone in isolated areas where it is unlikely I will encounter other hikers. About 50% of my hikes last year.

I didn't count Vermont since no carry permit is required at all....apparently.

Time to move to Vermont, apparently.

Depends entirely on what part of the state you are visiting. Ca has strict laws, and each county interprets and enforces differently. Rural counties basically ignore some of the laws. CA is one of the more non-uniform states.

Many of the rural counties hand out CCW permits like candy at Halloween, LA & SF issue almost none.

CA does not recognize CC permits from any other state. But as previously noted, unless someone does something stupid around you no one will know whether you are armed or not.

Just don't count on you not being the guy they decide to make an example of.

Follow all state laws, or stay out of the state.

A quick tip re: concealed weapons permits. One of the items that is required on a Tennessee Handgun Permit is your DRIVERS LICENSE NUMBER. According to my firearms instructor, many states also require that number for issuance of their permits. Get stopped by a LEO for a drivers license check and the LEO will know immediately that you are a concealed weapon permit holder. It will show up when your records check is pulled. In Tennessee, it is not required to state to a LEO that you have weapons on your person or in your vehicle, but in many states it is a requirement. Don't think you can pull a fast one on the cops. You might wind up in the back of a police cruiser, your vehicle in an impound lot where it will be thoroughly searched, and your traveling companions highly inconvenienced.

In MI you must notify immediately.

All kinds of weird pitfalls and snags in different states, although way better than a few years ago. Shooters used to have problems traveling to Camp Perry OH, including police requirements to show ownership of firearms, not just permits. Especially long guns used at marksmanship programs there. Some were not written into the code it appeared, but if you wanted to stay clear of trouble you brought documentation.
