Depends entirely on what part of the state you are visiting. Ca has strict laws, and each county interprets and enforces differently. Rural counties basically ignore some of the laws. CA is one of the more non-uniform states.
Many of the rural counties hand out CCW permits like candy at Halloween, LA & SF issue almost none.
CA does not recognize CC permits from any other state. But as previously noted, unless someone does something stupid around you no one will know whether you are armed or not.
Just don't count on you not being the guy they decide to make an example of.
Follow all state laws, or stay out of the state.
