Traveling with glass

My 2 cents given free: Every one of those glass products went down a conveyor line at the bottling plant doing close to the speed of sound. Then put on a train car, jolted down some rusty old train track, transferred to the back of a semi truck, beat up by every bump in the road that no "underpaid by the mile" driver ever slows down for. It got thrown on a pallet jack, bounced up on a loading dock. Slung around the store and finally up on the shelf for you to buy. That final destination happened somewhere around midnight, compliments of some purple haired kid, who didn't give rats behind whether it broke or not, this job was just temporary anyway, he's goina' "bounce this town" and be a tattoo artist someday. All he needs is the funds to bail out his "Babies Momma" and he's gone! So,,,, as I see it, it's been well tested, you ain't goina break it and sadly,,, most of this is true.

No breakage, ever. One time the refrigerator door came open and I had plastic containers on the floor. Bean soup stayed upright (lucky there !). I found hard boiled eggs all over but unhurt. I find it very important to carry an empty glass jar for any cooking grease or liquid. Easy to dump in the trash & it’s not my problem anymore.

Many of the kitchen supplies we use at home come in glass containers. Think salsa, spaghetti sauce, and wine. I have found some substitutes we use for camping like spaghetti sauce in a can. But some things I haven’t been able to find in anything but glass.

Do you bring any glass items in your RV/camper? If so, how do you ensure it doesn’t break while on the road? For example, do you have a special wine bottle storage container?

We carry several glass items. They all have rubber cloth either between them or wrapped around them.

I've also installed double latches on all cabinet doors.

We take our RV off-highway, so use of break-proof containers is absolutely necessary ... plus U.S. highways are pretty rough all over anyway.

My wife came up with the idea of using old socks with the toe cutout over the glass items she wanted to protect. Works like a charm.

We cay lots of stuff in glass and have never had a problem. We even hoe the fancy wine glasses in a rack inside the cabinet. Never had anything break. We use the expandable plastic wine bottle sleeves on the wine glasses to keep them from clinking.

Not a concern. The pickle jars and spaghetti jars will be fine unless you're getting pretty Western with your RV!

We carry the same stuff as we had at home, glass glasses, glass jars, glass casserole and serving dishes etc. I have cupboards lined with the waffle weave shelf liner and the pantry keeps any jars secure as the shelves have space in a row for 1 can/jar and is not extra big for them to even move around. The front lip is upturned a little which keeps them from moving forward against the cabinet door. 9 years full-time, nothing has ever broken.

Keep an eye on the glass plate in your microwave. I was delivering a motorhome and was on a rough road when the microwave door opened and the plate fell out and broke. Turns out the microwave door doesn't have a way to lock, just an easy pull on the handle and it opens. If you have one of those I'd take the plate out and lay it on the bed.

Fulltiming since 2011. We use exactly the same as we did in-the house. Corell plates etc.

I have found that glass food jars are most susceptible to breakage when they are next to each other - something about the way they hit. So in the cupboard, I separate them with plastic and/or canned goods so the two glass items won't touch. That seems to work as I haven't had any break.
