Traveling with Wave 3

Any downsides to towing with the Wave 3 on? Pad failure from vibration, fire?? I'd rather not use the furnace, as it uses a bunch more propane. The propane will be on anyway for the refer. It doesn't cool very well on D.C. I expect that the wiring is undersized. I'm just looking to keep the chill off.

  • Hi All.

We do mostly all Boon-Docking, both Summer and Winter also. We have used a "BUDDY" MR. Heater, for over 20 years or so. We also have a "Big Buddy" Mr. Heater" also, since they first came out.

We also use #6 Oly Wave Heater for over twenty years also. We never even use our RV's Furances over all of these years. I do keep them working properly, in case of an Emergency though.

We also have 4 EA "Ceramic Heaters" also. Got more than enough "Power" and then some for on Board. Just ta look at our Signature. We can run past our Motorhomes 30 AMP Limit anytime we feel like it. We never worry about how cold it gets. We have had over 25 years of living in real Cold, Snow Country, where the Snow doesent melt off for 6 months out of most years. Been use to minus -20 Below Zero, -30 Below Zero, -40 Below Zero and even lower. Getting a little to old to do that type of Winter Boon-Docking anymore. But the stuff that they have around here, is childs play. Good Luck. Happy Travels. Dan & Jill & our 2 "YORKIE KIDS.

i love my heaters 'wave' and 'blue flame'
But would not leave one on Unattended in a tt while towing

    as far as the fridge
DC mode is Not for cooling
    it is for Keeping/maintaining temp
fridge has to be pre cooled on LP before using DC mode

if it will not do that
the charge wiring in the 'tow' connection is not large enough
  • The only downsides are fire, explosion, or asphyxiation. Once you're past that, you're good to go.
  • My concern is shifting objects. Something flammable hits the Wave 3 or other heater, or the heater shifts and contacts paper or wood, and a TT can go up in seconds, especially once the propane lines get melted through which can massively feed the flames.

Don't those big motorhomes have propane furnaces? I wouldn't think that you could heat those things just with the engine hot water. They must run the furnace going down the road.

Which big motorhomes? Those with hot water heat whille usually have a diesel fueled boiler to supplant engine waste heat when the engine is off. Engine waste heat is more than enough for the largest coach when traveling.

Not that this has much of anything to do with a question about using a Wave portable as alternative to RV furnace.

  • We've used a propane heater for 16 years and move around the country continuously. We've never had an issue of damage while driving. However, we would never let it ON when towing.
  • I have a Wave 6 and I would not consider running it while traveling, even in a motorhome. For one thing, you have to have ventilation to run it and it might defeat the whole purpose. The risks of fire or damage to the heater is just too great, IMO.
